I created the “Smart Steps for Strong Readers Program” so that every parent can give their child the knowledge and effective practice they need to be a strong reader.
I received my Master’s Degree in Special Education about 15 years ago. I have taught in the public school system, as well as many private settings. I love to teach and to watch each student progress. I am very passionate about good teaching practices and have devoted a great deal of my time to developing this program to not only be easy, but extremely effective.
When my oldest child desperately wanted to read at age 3, I questioned whether it was wise to teach her so young. I had the education and experience to do it, but I didn’t want to push her. After wrestling with it for a while, I decided I didn’t want to quelch any desire of hers to learn; so I began to teach her. It only took about 10 minutes per day, but by the time she entered Kindergarten she read at a 3rd grade level. She was the best reader in her class, and quickly became the best reader in the school. Everything in school was easier for her because she could read so well.
I followed the same program to teach all six of my children to read; even though each child has vastly different learning styles and interests. All of them were good readers before they entered Kindergarten and have remained strong readers throughout their school experience. This is not because my kids are innately smart or that reading is their passion.
My kids have very different academic abilities, but I can definitively say they have done well in school because they are strong readers. As I have watched so many kids struggle with reading (which affects their whole school experience), I decided I wanted to do something to help. I created this program, which I have refined over the years, to help parents help their children become a strong reader. I want each child to be taught to read, correctly and effectively, so they can be an exceptional reader.
